As of February 2016, after 416 posts, and over six and a half years of blogging, I'm taking a break.
I've explained why here. There's plenty of past posts to read, though - hope you enjoy them !
Looking for a brilliant present for a young naturalist ? Buy my book ! Available from Amazon UK,
Amazon US and worldwide but buy from a local bookshop if you can.

So..... what would you like to ask me ?

Jake

On 21st July will be five years since my very first post here which seems quite amazing. I don't often celebrate blog birthdays, but I thought five years would be worth a special post.

So here's my plan: on the 21st July I will do a special Q&A post where I answer any questions you have. I'm thinking the questions would be more about the blogging side and my book, rather than specific scientific questions on bones, but if you have any good other questions I'll try to answer them as well.

Add your questions as a comment here, email them to me at jakesbones@gmail.com, add them to my Facebook page or tweet them to @jakesbones, and I look forward to answering them on the 21st !

Enjoy this post ? Share it !

What is the coolest thing you've ever found?

Why is the "secret bone cleaning method" kept secret and will there be a time it can be revealed to all us other boneheads too?

Bessie H said...

do you find bones all the time or just like 1 a month

Why don't you degrease your bones? Have you seen a noticeable difference in quality of some bones than others because of a higher grease content that rises to the surface?

Have you found any good plastic storage boxes for keeping bones/ skulls that are at least clear on top so you can see what's in them?

Jake - Can you help me identify the animal this came from? It was found on the beach of a large lake in Vermont (USA) last month July 2014. Thanks - email is 1@cj22.com

I found a sun-dried frog in my yard, and plan on cleaning it with biological washing water. How long should I leave the frog in it before I take it out?

Jake said...

I use two sizes, one are thick plastic used to put model cars in, the other are business card boxes in clear plastic. Can't remember where I got them, sorry !

Jake said...

Looks fishy and spiney ! I'll ask on Twitter.

Jake said...

Hard to say, keep an eye on it. I know another expert recommends very dilute - eg 1.5% - hydrogen peroxide for frogs, and checking regularly every hour.

How do you keep track of the really small bones without losing them?

Jake said...

Carefully ! Small skulls are kept in clear boxes or display cabinets; small bones like carpals and tarsals are kept in bags with the rest of the skeleton.

SOTB said...

Thanks Jake. What does "spiney" mean?

Jake said...

Ha ! I just meant from the spine. One expert I know on Twitter recommended a fish expert, and I'm waiting to hear back from her.

Thanks Jake. You're the coolest...

Thank you. :)

I have yet another question about the enzymes. (Sorry I keep bothering you.) In an email to me, you say " add a capful of washing powder for about 3 litres of water" And I was wondering how much a capful is. Sorry I can't seem to figure stuff out. The powder I got is in a box, and so it doesn't have a cap.

Jake said...

I don't use exact measurements but about 1/4 of a capful. Or just use the amount suggested on the box.
